What Is a Darker Color?
A darker color is created by reducing the lightness of a base color in HSL. Because HSL separates lightness from hue and saturation, darkening is a clean operation — the hue stays the same, the color simply becomes less light. This is the same technique used in design systems to build "600", "700" and "800" variants of a primary color.
When to Use Darker Colors
- Hover states: Buttons typically darken by 8–15% on hover.
- Active/pressed states: Darken further for pressed feedback.
- Borders and dividers: Slightly darker than the surface behind them.
- Text emphasis: Darkest shade for headings, body text.
- Shadows: Use a darkened, saturated version of the brand color for colored shadows.
