What Is a Color Library?

A color library is a curated catalog of named colors with their HEX values, organized for easy browsing and reference. Unlike generated color palettes (which compute colors algorithmically), a library presents colors that have recognized names and cultural associations — crimson, sage, cerulean, terracotta — that designers, developers, and brand strategists use to communicate intent.

How the Library Is Organized

Colors are grouped into 10 hue families — Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Teal/Cyan, Blue, Indigo/Purple, Magenta/Pink and Neutrals. Each family contains 20 named colors spanning light to dark, muted to vivid, with HEX codes verified against standard references.

Uses of a Named Color Library

  • Brand communication: Saying "crimson" is faster than reciting a HEX code.
  • Design research: Finding precedent colors by name for a specific aesthetic.
  • CSS development: Named colors work as-is in every browser.
  • Color naming: Verifying whether a color you picked has a common name.
