What Is a Color Converter?
A color converter translates a color value from one format to another — for example, HEX to RGB or HSL to HEX. Every format describes the same visible color, but each is optimized for different environments: HEX and RGB for the web, HSL for design systems, CMYK for print.
Formats Explained
HEX — six-digit hexadecimal code from #000000 to #FFFFFF. Two digits per channel (red, green, blue). Compact and widely used in CSS.
RGB — three integers from 0–255. Directly reflects how screens mix red, green and blue light. Used in JavaScript, canvas and OpenGL.
HSL — hue (0–360°), saturation (0–100%), lightness (0–100%). Easier to reason about when building palettes. Modern CSS supports hsl() directly.
HSV — like HSL but with "value" instead of lightness. Common in color pickers and image editors.
CMYK — cyan, magenta, yellow, black percentages. Used in print. CMYK ↔ RGB conversion is approximate because the two gamuts are not identical.
How the Conversion Works
All conversions are mathematically exact for HEX, RGB, HSL and HSV because these are just different coordinate systems for the same sRGB color space. RGB ↔ CMYK uses the standard formula but is only approximate because print and screen colors cannot be perfectly mapped.
